Highway of Heroes tribute planned for fallen OPP officer

A funeral for OPP Sgt Brandon Malcolm is being held today in Cobourg.

A private funeral service will be held this morning in Cobourg for Northumberland OPP Sergeant Brandon Malcolm, the officer killed in the line of duty in a motorcycle collision on Highway 401 last month.

The 33-year-old officer died April 27 near Burnham Street while on duty. 

Police continue to investigate the crash as communities across Ontario  and Canada prepare to honour his life and service.

The funeral service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at the Cobourg Community Centre. While the service itself is private, members of the public are being invited to pay their respects in several ways throughout the morning.

The funeral cortege will travel from Oshawa along the 401 eastbound to Cobourg. 

Many are expected to gather on overpasses along the route, continuing a long-standing tradition of honouring fallen officers, armed forces members, and first responders.

Police officers and emergency crews will march through part of Cobourg as the procession enters the community. Spectators are expected to line a sidewalk near the community centre to watch the tribute.

Although the funeral is closed to the public, the Ontario Provincial Police will provide a livestream through its YouTube channel so residents across the province can take part from home.
