Ontario SPCA performed 227 spay and neuter surgeries on Tuesday.
The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society marked World Spay Day on Feb. 24 by providing 227 free spay and neuter surgeries across Ontario, preventing an estimated 12,000 unplanned puppies and kittens from entering shelters.
To meet demand, the organization tripled its daily surgical capacity at its spay and neuter clinics in Barrie, Stouffville, Durham, Thunder Bay and Sudbury by extending hours and adding staff. Ontario SPCA Neuter Scooters also operated in Napanee, Durham, and Orangeville, where 24 free surgeries were completed locally.
All procedures were offered at no cost to underserved families, removing financial barriers to essential pet care. The Ontario SPCA says spaying and neutering plays a key role in reducing pet overpopulation and improving animal welfare.
World Spay Day is a global initiative, with animal welfare groups around the world taking part in similar efforts to support communities and protect animals.
