Ontario residents can cast a line for free this Father’s Day weekend as the province offers two days of licence-free fishing on June 20 and 21.
The Ministry of Natural Resources says Canadian residents will not need a fishing licence or Outdoors Card during the special free-fishing period. The initiative is designed to encourage families to spend time outdoors and introduce more people to recreational fishing.
While licences are not required, anglers must still follow all provincial fishing regulations, including catch and size limits, fishing sanctuaries and seasonal restrictions.
The Father’s Day weekend event is the third of four free-fishing opportunities offered in Ontario this year. The final free-fishing period will take place during Family Fishing Week from June 27 to July 5.
Recreational fishing remains a major economic driver in Ontario, with more than 1.16 million anglers contributing an estimated $2.4 billion annually to the province’s economy.
Participants must carry government-issued identification showing their name and date of birth.
