Province waives fishing license requirements from Feb. 14 to 16.
Ontario residents can cast a line without a license this Family Day weekend as the province offers three days of free fishing.
From Feb. 14 to 16, Canadian residents can fish without buying a fishing license or Outdoors Card, the Ministry of Natural Resources said Thursday.
“Family Day weekend is a perfect time for families to get outdoors and enjoy ice fishing here in Ontario,” said Natural Resources Minister Mike Harris. He encouraged both experienced anglers and first-timers to take part.
The province is reminding people to put safety first. Anglers should check local ice conditions before heading out. Clear blue ice is the strongest, while white or honeycombed ice is weaker. People are also advised to tell someone where they are going and dress for the weather.
All conservation license catch limits and other fishing rules still apply. Participants must carry government-issued identification showing their name and date of birth.
Family Day weekend is the first of four free fishing periods in Ontario this year.
