Kingston Fire & Rescue is reminding students that fire prevention should be at the top of their back-to-school checklist.
Kingston Fire & Rescue is urging students to brush up on fire and life safety basics as the new school year gets underway.
The department says cooking remains a leading cause of structure fires in Ontario, reminding students to never leave stoves, grills, hot plates or toaster ovens unattended. Students should also avoid cooking when tired or impaired.
KFR is also warning about lithium-ion battery and electrical fires. Students should use Canadian-certified products, inspect chargers and cables and follow manufacturers’ instructions.
Working smoke alarms are required on every floor where people sleep. Carbon monoxide alarms may also be needed in homes with fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces or attached garages.
Students living with roommates should make an escape plan, know two ways out and leave immediately when an alarm sounds.
KFR says students should take fire safety seriously throughout the school year.
