"Finally, it's here!" Loyalist Township pool opens July 20!
Loyalist Township's long-awaited new aquatic centre, named the Barr Homes Aquatic Centre, will officially open on July 20, marking the completion of a major community project to replace the township's aging pool.
Mayor Jim Hegadorn said the facility is ready to welcome swimmers after months of construction, staffing and training.
The previous pool had exceeded its expected lifespan, prompting the township to build a new facility at the W.J. Henderson Recreaction Centre, featuring an eight-lane, 25-metre pool and a separate warm-water leisure pool for recreation and therapeutic use.
Registration for programs opens today, July 6, first to Loyalist Township and Kingston residents before expanding to everyone else on Thursday, July 9. Hegadorn said the arrangement reflects Kingston's $6.5-million contribution toward construction.
Some residents have questioned whether the shared registration period could make programs fill more quickly. Hegadorn said the larger facility is expected to prevent that.
Hegadorn also thanked the fundraising committee, which has raised about $1.7 million.
