2024 household travel data shows shifting habits as remote work and active transportation rise.
A new household travel survey suggests people in Kingston are changing how they get around, with fewer daily trips and more residents choosing to walk.
The 2024 Kingston Moves survey, conducted by R.A. Malatest & Associates Ltd., gathered data from more than 3,500 households, tracking travel patterns over a typical weekday. Results show households now average 5.66 trips per day, down 12 per cent from 2019.
Walking accounts for 23 per cent of trips, up from 18 per cent, while driving and carpooling have declined slightly. Active and sustainable transportation, including cycling and transit, now make up about one-third of all trips.
The survey also found more people are working from home, with 13 per cent doing so full time.
City officials say the findings will help guide future transportation planning, including the Integrated Mobility Plan, to better reflect how residents travel across urban and rural areas.
