Report suggests increasing female cadet quotas
Defence Minister Bill Blair has confirmed that Canada’s two military colleges will remain open, but major reforms are on the way.
The Whig-Standard reports that an independent report, released just before International Women’s Day, recommends increasing female cadet quotas to 33 per cent by 2035.
The report, which follows a 2022 review by Justice Louise Arbour on sexual misconduct, also calls for eliminating the peer leadership model and physical performance tests. Critics worry that removing senior cadet authority over juniors could weaken leadership development.
The panel examined whether misogyny and misconduct at Royal Military College of Canada and RMC Saint-Jean were too ingrained to fix. Unlike U.S. reports, it did not focus on the military’s overall purpose.
Canada’s Armed Forces have shrunk from 126,000 members in 1962 to just 63,000 today. While the report is unlikely to reverse these trends, global events could shift public perception of military service.
