Carfentanil increases the risk of drug poisonings and death.
Health officials are warning about a dangerous rise in carfentanil in Kingston’s unregulated drug supply. The South East Health Unit says the potent opioid, which is 100 times stronger than fentanyl, is showing up in drugs expected to be fentanyl at the local Consumption and Treatment Services site.
The presence of carfentanil increases the risk of drug poisonings and death. Higher-than-usual doses of naloxone may be needed to reverse its effects.
Officials are urging people not to use drugs alone, avoid mixing substances, and go slow due to the unpredictable drug supply.
Free naloxone kits and training are available. Kingston’s supervised drug use site at 661 Montreal Street is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Virtual help is also available 24/7 through the National Overdose Response Service at 1-888-688-6677.
