Yellow Warning issued
Environment Canada has issued a Yellow Cold Warning for Kingston and much of eastern Ontario as a prolonged period of dangerous wind chills is expected tonight into Saturday morning.
Forecasters say wind chills near minus 30 are possible, and similar conditions may return Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Officials say extreme cold puts everyone at risk, especially young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people who work or exercise outdoors, and those without proper shelter.
Residents are urged to watch for symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour changes in fingers and toes.
People are also asked to check on older family, friends and neighbours.
Drivers should keep emergency supplies in their vehicles, including extra blankets and jumper cables.
If symptoms appear, move indoors and begin warming right away.
Outdoor workers should take regular breaks to warm up during the cold spell.
Local officials urge residents to follow updated forecasts.
