Contraband worth $83,000 seized at Joyceville Institution

Seizure follows suspected drone drop at the facility

Correctional Service Canada says staff members at Joyceville Institution seized more than $83,000 worth of contraband and unauthorized items following a suspected drone drop on Saturday, July 18.

The multi-level security federal institution reported the seizure included tobacco, marijuana, hashish, cellphones and cellphone accessories. The estimated institutional value of the items was approximately $83,310.

CSC said the seizure was the result of staff vigilance and ongoing efforts to prevent illegal items from entering federal facilities.

The agency uses security tools such as ion scanners and detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates and visitors.

CSC said it continues to work with police to address attempts to bring contraband into correctional institutions.

The agency also operates a confidential tip line for information related to security concerns, including drug use or trafficking. Tips can be submitted anonymously by calling 1-866-780-3784.
