Free utility locates are required by law as digging season ramps up across Ontario.
As spring projects begin, utilities officials are urging homeowners and contractors to request free underground locates before digging, warning the risks can be serious.
By contacting Ontario One Call, residents can identify buried infrastructure and avoid damaging gas lines, electrical cables or pipes. The service is free and required by law.
Robert Bowen, supervisor of inspection and support engineering at Utilities Kingston, says many hazards sit just below the surface and can lead to injuries or service disruptions if struck.
Provincial data shows underground lines are hit more than 3,900 times each year, with many incidents preventable. Research also suggests 57 per cent of homeowners did not request a locate before their last project.
Officials say requests typically take five business days for single addresses and up to 10 for larger jobs.
