Investigators in Jefferson County say they don't believe the death is criminal in nature.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says a body recovered from the St. Lawrence River near Wellesley Island has been identified as a 30-year-old woman from Horseheads, New York.
According to a media release, the body was located at approximately 11:30 Sunday morning, October 25th, in about 100 feet of water a short distance from shore, near the US Span of the Thousand Islands Bridge.
The woman, identified as Alea L. Melendez, was the registered owner of a vehicle found abandoned on the bridge late Friday night.
Investigators say surveillance footage showed no other people or vehicles near Melendez’s vehicle when it was abandoned.
The sheriff’s office says the incident is not considered criminal in nature.
