Femicide investigation underway
A 25-year-old woman has died following a violent incident in Kingston’s west end.
On May 16 around 2:45 p.m., Kingston Police responded to a disturbance near Berrywood Crescent and Juniper Drive. A male suspect had barricaded himself inside a home.
When police entered, they found a seriously injured woman inside. She was rushed to hospital but later died of her injuries.
A man at the scene, 26-year-old Hadden Harper-Brewer, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the killing of his intimate partner. Kingston Police are calling the incident a femicide — the killing of a woman in the context of intimate partner violence.
Police say the term femicide highlights gender-based violence, even though it is not yet part of Canada’s Criminal Code.
