Ice storm continues in Kingston and surrounding areas
UPDATE: The Freezing Rain warning for Kingston and the surrounding area has come to an end. Freezing rain will be changing to periods of rain this afternoon with a high of 4. Crews are still out dealing with icy roads and sidewalks, downed power lines and working to restore power outages. You're encouraged to avoid non-essential travel and stay home if possible. --- A major ice storm continues in Kingston, Odessa, and the Frontenac Islands, with freezing rain expected to continue into the afternoon. Environment Canada warns of ice build-up between 10 and 20 mm, with some areas possibly exceeding 25 mm by the time it is done. Widespread power outages are likely as ice accumulates on power lines and tree branches, increasing the risk of breakage. The City, Kingston Police, and OPP have asked residents to avoid non-essential travel and stay home if possible. There is a light at the end of the tunnel though, the freezing rain is expected to transition to regular rain this afternoon as temperatures rise above zero. Until then, the risk of dangerous travel conditions remains high. Those venturing outside should be cautious of falling branches and ice-covered surfaces.
Residents should take extra care on roads and sidewalks, which may be extremely slippery. Drivers are urged to slow down, maintain a safe distance, and watch for taillights ahead.
