City program offers $20 trees, planting tips and expert help for property owners.
With spring around the corner and Earth Day approaching next month, Kingston residents may have a simple way to make a lasting impact, starting in their own backyard.
The Neighbourhood Tree Planting Program in Kingston is giving property owners a low-cost way to grow the city’s tree canopy while improving their own yards.
Through the program, residents can buy up to three trees per property for $20 each from a selection of 11 species. Trees are sold on a first-come, first-served basis during the sale period and must be planted on property owned within the city.
Purchases can be made online through the City’s recreation portal or in person at Rideau Heights Community Centre, Kingston East Community Centre, INVISTA Centre and Artillery Park.
Residents needing help choosing, planting or arranging delivery can contact Leaf Kingston for assistance.
The city reminds buyers to choose planting spots carefully, avoiding public right-of-way areas, utility boxes and overhead wires. Trees should be spaced five to six metres apart and watered regularly, with no fertilizer used during the first two years.
