Staff receive training to improve understanding and reduce stigma.
The South East Health Unit (SEHU) is marking Pride Month by promoting health equity and inclusion for 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals. June celebrates diverse genders and sexualities while raising awareness of the challenges faced by this community, including discrimination and stigma that affect access to healthcare, education, jobs, and housing.
SEHU offers inclusive services such as support for gender-diverse new parents, clinics welcoming all sexual orientations, and assistance for queer youth in schools. Staff receive training to improve understanding and reduce stigma. The health unit also inspects LGBTQ-owned businesses and updates its spaces to be more inclusive.
“As an agency committed to helping our communities to be as healthy as they can be, it is important for the South East Health Unit to be leaders in voicing our support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community,” says Dr. Piotr Oglaza, Medical Officer of Health and CEO for SEHU.
“Discrimination and stigmatization are damaging factors for both mental and physical health, and lead to harmful outcomes for individuals who face these realities. South East Health Unit staff strive to be supportive, inclusive and welcoming to all individuals who access our services.”
