UPDATE: Snowfall warning in effect as up to 25 centimetres hits region today

Heavy snow and gusty winds expected to disrupt travel and Monday commute

Environment Canada has issued a yellow snowfall warning as a significant winter storm moves into the region today.

Heavy snow is expected to begin this afternoon and continue into Monday morning, with total snowfall amounts of 15 to 25 centimetres. Visibility may be reduced at times due to heavy snow and local blowing snow.

Northeasterly winds gusting 40 to 50 kilometres per hour are forecast, which may cause drifting snow, particularly in exposed areas. Travel is expected to be challenging, with roads and walkways becoming difficult to navigate as snow accumulates.

Environment Canada says the snow will taper to lighter snowfall or flurries from west to east on Monday morning, but the morning commute may still be impacted.

The City of Kingston has declared a significant weather event. Public Works staff continue to work clearing snow and ice from streets, sidewalks and bus shelters but say that winter maintenance service levels may not be met due to forecasted heavy snowfall and cold temperatures lasting beyond the snowfall ending.

They are also ask that collection bins are free from ice that could prevent them from opening. Automated waste containers and green bins cannot be collected if covered in ice.

The Artillery Park Aquatic Centre will be open tonight as an overnight warming centre for those in need.

The Kingston Frontenacs' away game for tonight against the Oshawa Generals was postponed due to these conditions. It will now be played this Tuesday night at 7:05 in Oshawa.

Residents are advised to allow extra travel time and monitor ongoing weather alerts and forecasts.
