Sentinels coming off better-than-expected inaugural season in Ontario Premier League

Promotion to League 2 will have to wait for the women while the men's fate will be decided on Saturday.

There has been plenty of ups and downs that the Kingston Sentinels experienced in their inaugural season in the Ontario Premier League.

The men's and women's squads, and the under-20 team all finished the regular season strong. 

Owner Paul Barbeau says the organization made great strides in their first season in the league.

The men, however, were the only Sentinels team that made it to the playoffs. They battled Borough FC on Monday where it was 2-2 at the end of regulation before the match was postponed because of rain.

The men's and women's teams play in League 3 which is the lowest of the OPL's three tiers. The Sentinels organization's goal was to get them promoted to League 2.

Barbeau explains what the results this season means for the two squads. 

The men will be in Vaughan this Saturday to resume their playoff match with Borough FC where it will be decided in a penalty shootout. The winner will then play Woodbridge Strikers B later that day for the division crown.

But Barbeau says there are a bunch of scenarios that come into play.

Off the pitch, the Sentinels had great turnouts for their home matches at CaraCo Field. 

Barbeau says there has been so much support for soccer in Kingston and wants to carry that momentum into next season.

Regardless of the outcome of the men's playoff match, Barbeau believes all three Sentinels team had a very successful season.
