McGowan scored one of the Fronts goals, McLean had 3 assists extending his point streak to 6 games.

A lack of jump in the second period put the Kingston Frontenacs in a hole that they couldn't get out of.

The visiting Peterborough Petes scored four unanswered goals in that period to take the lead and held on to beat the Frontenacs 5-3 Sunday afternoon at Slush Puppie Place snapping Kingston's nine-game winning steak at home.

The Frontenacs (21-22-2-2) got off to a good start with a strong first period highlighted by Maleek McGowan's 10th goal of the season at the 16:24 mark for a 1-0 lead.

Peterborough then flipped the script in the middle frame as the Petes (27-19-1-2) took advantage of an early powerplay opportunity and scored on a goal by Aiden Young to tie it up 1-1.

Braydon McCallum and Brennan Faulkner would score later in the period for the Petes 1:41 apart to take a 3-1 and chase Frontenacs starting netminder Matthew Minchak (8 saves) out of the game.

Frontenacs Captain Vann Williamson believes the difference in the game was the puck battles.

Head coach Troy Mann echoed Williamson's comments adding that caused them to miss out on some opportunities.

With the Petes up 5-1, the Frontenacs made an come-back effort in the final frame. Williamson and Kieran Dervin scored to cut Peterborough's lead down to 5-3.

In that third period, Mann changed up the lines in an effort to generate more chances but also add some more grit.

He says espcially like what he saw from Adam Kelly when he was paired with Dervin and Alex Misiak.

Kingston remains 7th in the East and with the 4th place Petes now gaining more distance from the Frontenacs.

Williamson says there is still some time left in the season to improve on their playoff position.

Gavin Betts came in for Minchak and stopped 19 shots while Alex McLean collected 3 assists to extend his point streak to six games. Matthew Soto and Adam Novotny also scored for the Petes while Easton Rye made 28 saves.

Kingston were 1-for-4 on the power play, Peterborough were 1-for-1.

It doesn't get any easier for the Frontenacs as they will take on the Eastern-Conference-leading Bulldogs in Brantford Wednesday night.

You can listen to the game with Jim Gilchrist on the call on Upper Canada Fuel and Burner Frontenacs Hockey on Kingston's New Country 98.9.
