Recycling in Kingston changes hands on Canada Day

Circular Materials is taking over the program from the City of Kingston.

The collection of pop cans and pizza boxes in Kingston will soon be handled by a third party.

Circular Materials will be overseeing the recycling program from the City of Kingston starting July 1.

In a news release, the province is shifting to a new system that is operated and funded by the producers of recyclable materials.

This approach is called extended producer responsibility and already applies to many commercial goods, including tires, batteries, electronics and hazardous materials like paint or antifreeze.

It goes on to say the transition is part of a provincial mandate that all Ontario municipalities are required to follow.

In Kingston, Emterra Environmental will be collecting recyclable materials.

The City says there should be no change to the pick up schedule, or how recyclables are collected, at least for the time being.
