Frontenac Islands purchased the dock on Wolfe Island from Horne Family.
The Township of Frontenac Islands is the new owner of the Canadian side of the Horne Ferry dock.
They announced on Dec. 5 that they had purchased the dock at Port Alexandria from the Horne Family for $325,000. The dock was originally listed for $450,000.
The Village of Cape Vincent, New York bought the dock on the US side for $225,000 US back in July.
Frontenac Islands Mayor Judy Greenwood-Speers explains the rationale behind buying the dock.
The last remaining piece of the three-part puzzle is the ferry itself as it is still up for sale.
Cape Vincent is hoping that someone will buy the ferry and bring the service between the village and Port Alexandria back.
Greenwood-Spears says while she is optimistic that the ferry service will resume, the one big sticking point is whether Canada Border Services Agency will be back at the dock.
She adds if the ferry service does not resume, they will hold on to the waterfront property for the time being.
Greenwood-Speers says the ferry serves an important link between the two communities as both sides benefit from the tourism.
There has been no ferry service between Wolfe Island and Cape Vincent since George Horne passed away in 2024. His brother, Bruce, retired a few years before and the rest family expressed no interest in running the service.
