The Kingston mayor says the cameras were meant as a safety tool and not to put money into municipal coffers.
Kingston's mayor says the City is using speed cameras as a safety tool and not a revenue generator.
Bryan Paterson weighed in on the Ford government's decision to ban the use of photo radar to enforce speed limits in Ontario.
Paterson tells 98.3 FLY FM's Reid and Ben that the City has been using speed cameras in school zones to get vehicles to slow down and for no other purpose.
Premier Doug Ford had previously said the photo radar cameras were nothing more than a "cash grab".
Paterson says he is disappointed that the province is moving ahead to ban the cameras.
He says he would understand the public backlash if municipalities were indeed using it as a revenue generator.
The Ford government did say they would fund alternative safety measures such as speed bumps, roundabouts, and curb extensions.
Paterson says he has no problem with the province going in that direction.
Photo radar cameras were first installed in Kingston after a child died after being struck by a vehicle while walking to school in 2022.
