The epicentre was southeast of Orillia and was felt as far east as Belleville.
A magnitude 3.7 earthquake rattled central and southern Ontario late Tuesday night.
According to Earthquakes Canada, the quake occurred at 10:59 p.m. with the epicentre located some 23 kilometres southeast of Orillia at a depth of five kilometres.
Social media immediately buzzed with reports of shaking and, in some cases, a roar or loud bang.
Earthquakes Canada received more than 2,600 calls from as far west as Kitchener, east through Toronto to Belleville, and from the Niagara region. Alex Lamore, was among many local residents who took to Facebook, asking “So whole else just experienced a house shake?”
Lamore says the experience was initially unnerving.
Lamore says the earthquake fits well with what central Ontario has experienced as of late.
Earthquakes Canada says the same area experienced two earthquakes of similar size in the last 25 years in addition to a magnitude 5.5 quake back in 1929.
