Police say vehicles are being targeted when packages or personal items are left in plain view.
Kingston Police are reminding residents to take extra precautions while shopping this Boxing Week, following a noticeable increase in thefts from motor vehicles across the city leading up to Christmas.
According to Kingston Police, many recent investigations show vehicles are being targeted when packages or personal items are left in plain view. Shopping bags, electronics, purses and backpacks visible through windows are often the main attraction for thieves.
Police say vehicles parked in shopping centre lots and residential areas are both being targeted, noting the incidents are happening citywide and are not limited to one neighbourhood.
Residents are urged to always remove valuables from their vehicles whenever possible. If items must be left behind, police recommend locking them in the trunk or placing them out of sight. Drivers are also reminded to lock all doors and fully close windows.
Anyone who becomes a victim of theft is encouraged to file a police report by calling 613-549-4660, ext. 0, or by using the online reporting tool on the Kingston Police website.
