Police believe thieves are targeting packages left unattended on doorsteps and apartment lobbies.
Kingston Police are warning residents to be cautious with home deliveries after a recent spike in package thefts, often referred to as “porch pirate” incidents.
Officers say most reports have come from downtown neighbourhoods, especially areas with a high number of university-aged students. Police believe thieves are targeting packages left unattended on doorsteps and apartment lobbies.
To reduce the risk, police are asking residents to consider alternative delivery options. They recommend having parcels sent to a nearby drop-off or pick-up site if people know they will not be home during the scheduled delivery time.
Anyone who has had items stolen is urged to file a report with Kingston Police. Reports can be made by calling 613-549-4660 ext. 0 or by filing online at www.kingstonpolice.ca
Police stress that reporting helps officers track trends and direct resources to the hardest-hit neighbourhoods.
