Kingston fans celebrate Captain Canuck’s 50th anniversary with creator visit

Co-creator Richard Comely met with fans at Nexus comic shop.

Fans of Canadian comics got a special treat last week as Richard Comely, co-creator of Captain Canuck, visited Kingston’s Nexus comic shop to mark the superhero’s 50th anniversary.

Comely, who first brought Captain Canuck to life with cartoonist Ron Leishman in 1975, spent the afternoon meeting fans, signing comic books, and showcasing prints and other merchandise. The visit was part of a 12-stop Canadian tour celebrating the iconic superhero.

Joining Comely was Fadi Hakim, writer and editor at Lev Gleason, who oversees publications from Comic House and New Friday. Together, they shared stories behind the character, offered insight into the comics industry, and connected with fans of all ages.

The Kingston stop gave local comic enthusiasts a chance to celebrate a Canadian icon, collect memorabilia, and honor the enduring legacy of Captain Canuck, a symbol of homegrown heroism that continues to inspire readers nationwide.
