New Business Licensing Bylaw outlines which businesses need licenses and what they must pay.
Kingston businesses are being reminded that some types of businesses require a municipal license to operate under the city’s updated Business Licensing Bylaw.
The new bylaw, passed in November 2025, took effect Jan. 1, 2026, replacing Kingston’s previous business licensing rules.
The bylaw covers specific business categories, including food premises, food vendors, gas stations, motor vehicle repair businesses, esthetician services, plumbing services, tobacco retailers and street performers.
License fees vary depending on the type of business. The City says applications may require reviews from multiple departments or outside organizations, meaning processing times can vary.
Business licenses generally need to be renewed annually by Dec. 31.
The City says the licensing system allows it to review business operations to help protect public health, safety and well-being.
