Kingston artist Clive Robertson has won a 2025 Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts for Artistic Achievement. He is one of six artists recognized for their lifelong contributions to Canadian arts.
Robertson, who moved to Canada from England in 1971, has spent decades shaping the country’s art scene. He co-founded W.O.R.K.S., one of Canada’s first artist collectives, and helped launch Centerfold magazine, later known as Fuse. He also ran the Voicespondence record label, supporting emerging musicians.
Robertson joined Queen’s University in 1999, helping start its graduate program in cultural studies before retiring in 2016.
The award includes a bronze medallion, $25,000, and a place in the National Gallery of Canada’s collection.
Robertson, previously nominated in 2002, said he was grateful for the recognition. The awards ceremony date has not yet been announced.
