Investigation into paving scam in Kingston leads to an arrest

Two men are charged under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, two others including one with an Irish accent remain at large.

Two men are in custody in connection to an investigation into a driveway paving scam in Kingston.

Police were called to a home on Sherwood Dr. Tuesday. An officer arrived to find a driveway that was in a partial state of repair.

Investigators say a white pick-up truck was present with the driver speaking to the officer from afar with an Irish accent. They say he and another occupant then left in the pick-up and drove off at a high rate of speed.

Two other people remained at the scene along with a number of shovels and rakes.

The homeowner spoke with investigators and told them a man with an Irish accent approached him about repaving the driveway. The man offered to do the work for $6,000 cash but the homeowner claimed he could not come up with the money.

It was then that the man offered do drive the homeowner to the bank before police arrived. No money ended up being exchanged.

Investigators say the two men that remained were later identified as foreign nationals and were arrested for violations of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. They were later handed over to agents with Canada Border Services Agency.

The investigation continues and anyone who had contact with the man with the Irish accent or have other information is asked to contact Kingston Police at 613-549-4660, ext. 0.
