The lawsuit includes costs for the failed work, bridge demolition, and plans for a new bridge.
The federal government is suing a contractor for more than $60 million after the LaSalle Causeway lift bridge in Kingston collapsed during repairs and had to be demolished.
CBC reports Landform Civil Infrastructures Inc. (LCI) was hired to repair the 100-year-old bridge but is now being blamed for a “catastrophic failure.” The government says LCI’s work caused part of the bridge to buckle, making the repairs useless.
The $60 million lawsuit includes costs for the failed work, bridge demolition, a temporary span, and plans for a new bridge. LCI had earlier sued the government for more than $8 million, saying it was unfairly blamed and unpaid.
An engineering report said workers removed key supports during the project, weakening the bridge. The government argues LCI did not follow safety procedures.
Several subcontractors are also suing LCI for unpaid bills. None of the claims have been tested in court. The case could be heard all at once.
