The Kingston and the Islands MP says work needs to be done to not rely on the US as an economic partner.
We are taking a look back at 2025 with Kingston and the Island MP Mark Gerretsen.
It began with a federal election two months after the provincial election in Ontario.
The Liberals formed a minority government this with Mark Carney as their leader.
Gerretsen easily regained his seat in the riding with a landslide victory.
Gerretsen says one of his accomplishments that he was most proud of in 2025 was the permanent funding for the national school food program.
Another highlight for Gerretsen was getting more funding for affordable housing in Kingston.
Looking ahead to 2026, Gerretsen says it is time for Canada to part ways with the United States as an economic partner.
He says his government will be forming and developing new partnerships with other nations.
Gerretsen says he is looking forward to working with the City of Kingston on finding a permanent solution to the Lasalle Causeway, getting VIA Rail to include Kingston as a stop in their future plans, and preserving the Kingston Penitentiary.
