Emancipation Day is observed annually across Canada on Aug. 1.
The City of Kingston will mark Emancipation Day on Friday, Aug. 1, with a flag-raising ceremony and community services fair in Confederation Park.
Emancipation Day commemorates the abolition of slavery across most of the British Empire in 1834. It has since become a day to reflect on the legacy of slavery, the fight for human rights and the work still needed to eliminate racism and discrimination in Canada.
The event begins at 11:30 a.m. with a flag raising involving Mayor Bryan Paterson, city councillors and local community leaders. A community services fair will follow from 12:30 to 3 p.m., offering residents the opportunity to engage with local organizations focused on equity, inclusion and social support.
The event is free and open to the public.
