Historic buildings damaged, businesses displaced, and a long road to recovery ahead
Cleanup efforts are underway in downtown Kingston following a fire that damaged two historic buildings and disrupted several nearby businesses.
The fire started Sunday night at 354 King St. E., home to The Shuroop Sushi Bar and Ramen House, before spreading through the basement, main floor, and second floor of the building. Flames later moved to the neighbouring property at the corner of King and Princess streets, which houses A-One Clothing, with apartments above.
All residents were evacuated safely and no injuries were reported. The blaze took about eight hours to extinguish due to the age and construction of the buildings. The cause remains under investigation.
A-One Clothing owner Michael Tenenhouse was seen Monday waiting to enter his store to assess smoke and water damage. The business has operated at the location since 1938 and plans to rebuild and remain downtown.
Nearby businesses were also affected. Chez Piggy, located in the Rochleau Court laneway, announced it will remain closed until further notice due to smoke damage.
The owners of The Shuroop Sushi Bar and Ramen House said the restaurant is insured and they plan to reopen, likely at a different location. According to the Downtown Kingston Business Improvement Area, fire crews remained on scene into Monday as cleanup continued.
