The park will close for 6 months to allow for the expansion of day services at the nearby Adelaide St. shelter.
Frontenac Public School Park will be temporarily closed to the public.
Starting July 2nd, the park will be closed for six months or when services at the nearby Adelaide St. shelter winds down which is expected to happen in early 2026.
There will be fencing and signage around the park to indicate that it is closed.
The City of Kingston said in a news release that the closure will allow for Lionhearts to use the park to safely expand their day services at the shelter.
Those services include gardening, educational programs and outdoor health and wellness activities.
The City says those and many other activities have been shown to positively impact mental health and aid in recovery efforts, helping participants develop a healthy path out of homelessness.
People not participating in day services will be prohibited from entering or using the park.
According to the City, members of the public who attended a recent Adelaide Near Neighbour Workshop raised the idea of closing and fencing Frontenac Park in order for Lionhearts to offer additional supports to those in days services.
