Heavy rain puts Kingston-area lakes and rivers at risk
Cataraqui Conservation has extended its flood watch for inland lakes and streams in the Kingston area, warning of possible localized flooding due to heavy rainfall in the coming days.
The region saw 6–7 mm of rain on April 5, and up to 25 mm is forecast between April 10 and 12. More rain could arrive next week, adding to concerns. While streamflows are returning to normal, some lakes remain above seasonal levels.
Soil in the area still cannot absorb much water, leading to increased runoff into lakes and rivers. Water managers are closely monitoring key areas such as the Gananoque River, Charleston Lake, and Loughborough Lake.
Widespread flooding is not expected, but low-lying areas may flood. Residents are advised to stay away from fast-flowing water, obey warning signs, and move belongings from flood-prone zones.
The flood watch remains in effect until April 23.
