Bulldogs put bite on Frontenacs

Kingston were not able to duplicate Wednesday's success against Brantford on Sunday.

It was not a super Sunday for the undermanned Kingston Frontenacs.

Four days after a shootout loss to the Frontenacs in Brantford, the league-leading Bulldogs made things difficult for the hometown team as they beat the Fronts 5-2 Sunday afternoon at Slush Puppie Place.

Captain Van Williamson says the Bulldogs capitalized on their chances early on in the game.

Brantford opened the scoring thanks to Camron Hankai's 2nd goal of the season at the 12:53 mark of the first period.

Kingston tied it at 1-1 midway through the second period on Landon Wright's 11th of the season. But the Bulldogs answered back with over five minutes left in the period when Cooper Denis received a Charlie Paquette pass and went by the Frontenacs defensemen and backhanded in his 26th of the season giving Brantford a 2-1 lead.

Fronts goaltender Gavin Betts says that was one he would like to have back.

Then with 31 seconds left in the period, the Frontenacs turned over the puck in their zone. Jett Luchanko recovers the puck and Jake O'Brien snaps the pass past Betts for a 3-1 lead.

Frontenacs head coach Troy Mann says that goal was a momentum killer for his team.

Mann also says the Frontenacs were not able to capitalize on their the breaks like the Bulldogs did.

Kingston were without Tomas Pobezal (upper body) and Alex McLean (flu), two important offensive pieces especially on their power play. But the Frontenacs were able to cut the Bulldogs' lead by one as Nolan Synder scored his 12th on the season with the man advantage.

Despite the loss, the Frontenacs grabbed four out of a possible six points something Williamson says will help as they look to catch up to teams ahead of them in the standings.

Paquette finished with two goals and an assist while David Egorov had 21 saves for the Bulldogs (35-8-6-2). Alex Misiak had two assists for the Fronts (24-23-2-2).

Power plays saw Kingston go 1-for-3 while Brantford did not score on their four of opportunities.

The next game for the Frontenacs is this Thursday night when they travel to Barrie to take on the Colts central division-leading Colts. Kingston's New Country 98.9 has the game just before 7 pm on Upper Canada Fuel and Burner Frontenacs Hockey with Jim Gilchrist.
