Those coming up from the U.S. for Thanksgiving should plan ahead.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is reminding travellers from the United States to plan ahead before crossing into Canada during the busy U.S. Thanksgiving long weekend.
CBSA officers welcome millions of travellers each year while working to protect communities and ensure goods and people move safely across the border. In 2024, more than 93 million travellers entered Canada, and officers intercepted tens of thousands of prohibited items including illegal drugs, weapons, and firearms.
Travellers are advised to have proper identification ready to present, such as a passport or NEXUS card, and to declare all goods, including gifts and food items. Those travelling with children who are not their own should carry a consent letter from parents or legal guardians.
The CBSA is also reminding visitors to check rules on restricted goods such as poultry, to leave firearms at home unless properly authorized, and that cannabis cannot be transported across the border under any circumstances.
Travellers are encouraged to check border wait times, consider alternate crossings, and aim for early morning travel to avoid long delays.
