Allergy season has arrived in Kingston

An aerobiologist says residents are experiencing watery eyes and runny noses this week.

For those with seasonal allergies, warm weather isn’t always something to celebrate.

We spoke with Daniel Coates, Director at the Aerobiology Research Laboratories, who says if Kingstonians are experiencing watery eyes and runny noses this week—there’s a good reason for it.

If you've noticed some good weeks and some not-so-good ones, you're not alone. It's already been a memorable start to allergy season, with Mother Nature giving us a rollercoaster of warm and cool temperatures.

At their lab, they also use collected data to make longer-range predictions. And if you're sensitive to pine or grass pollen—brace yourself.

Coates points out that these predictions are still very much weather dependent, especially when it comes to grass pollen. A mild and consistently warm spring and summer could lead to a more intense allergy season, while extreme heat might actually suppress grass growth and pollen release.

The Aerobiology Research Laboratories has been collecting daily pollen data for nearly 35 years and offers tips to help allergy sufferers better manage their symptoms.
