Carey Smith-Dewey begins her new role on Feb. 2.
The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board has announced Carey Smith-Dewey as its new Director of Education. She will officially begin her role on February 2, 2026, following the retirement of Director DeSantis on January 30.
Carey Smith-Dewey has spent her career with the board, starting as an elementary and secondary teacher in Hastings and Prince Edward counties. She later became Vice-Principal at St. Paul Catholic Secondary School in Trenton and Principal of St. Theresa Catholic Secondary School in Belleville. In 2020, she was appointed Superintendent of Education at the Board Office in Napanee, where she advocated for safe and inclusive learning environments.
Board Chair Brian Evoy highlighted that Carey is the first female Director in the board’s history and praised her extensive experience in Catholic education. Carey said she is honoured to lead with purpose, focusing on Gospel values, academic excellence, equity, and inclusion to ensure every student is supported and inspired to succeed.
