Production at the plant is being reduced due to the US tariffs on aluminum.
The US tariffs have impacted those working at Novelis in Kingston.
The manufacturer of aluminum products for marine, transportation, and industrial uses announced on Friday that a third of the employees at the Kingston plant are being cut.
In an email to Kingston Daily, the head of communications for Novelis North America Fiona Bell says 10 salaried positions are being eliminated, and 70 hourly employees will be temporarily laid off.
She says production at the plant is being reduced as a result of the Section 232 duties on Canadian aluminum imported into the United States.
This is the second round of layoffs at Novelis in Kingston in a little more than a year. The first occurred in 2025 that saw 21 workers affected also due to US tariffs.
