Why people across Kingston are wearing purple this March

Epilepsy South Eastern Ontario marks Epilepsy Awareness Month with community events and education across the region.

March is Epilepsy Awareness Month, and Epilepsy South Eastern Ontario is encouraging residents to learn more about the neurological condition while supporting people living with epilepsy.

About one in 100 Canadians live with epilepsy. In South Eastern Ontario alone, more than 5,500 people are affected, according to Epilepsy South Eastern Ontario.

Executive director Brandy Sheahan says having a dedicated month to recognize epilepsy helps raise awareness and support.

ESEO says the condition can also lead to social isolation and mental health challenges, making education and community understanding important.

Sheahan says there are still many misconceptions about the condition.

Several events are planned this month to raise awareness and funds for local programs.

Coffee Way Donuts is hosting Purple Donut Day every Friday in March and again on Purple Day, March 26, with proceeds supporting ESEO’s services.

A Bowling for Epilepsy fundraiser is also planned for March 22 at Limestone Lanes.

Purple Day for epilepsy awareness takes place March 26, and residents are encouraged to wear purple to show support.

Founded in 1985, ESEO provides non-medical support, education, and advocacy for people with epilepsy and their families across Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington, and Leeds and Grenville counties.
