Police have received several reports across the city.
It seems the taxi scam made it back to Kingston for homecoming.
Investigators with Kingston Police say they have received several reports about this scam across the city.
The taxi scam involves two or more people trying to convince potential victims to help pay for a cab fare.
One of the scammers tells the person that the driver won't accept cash and needs someone with a credit or debit card to help pay for the fare. The person would use their card and PIN to settle the transaction and receives cash from the passenger.
But during the transaction, the person's card is swapped with a fake one and the PIN is stolen. The scammer than uses the card and PIN to withdraw money from a nearby ATM.
A similar scam earlier this year targeted victims around Queen's University. The scam uses vehicles that have fake or stolen taxi lights and Ontario license plates.
Police are reminding people not let anyone physically handle their credit or debits cards or their phones.
Investigators are asking anyone who may have been approached by these individuals to contact Kingston Police at 613-549-4660 ext 0, or use the online reporting portal at the Kingston Police website.
