66 reports were filed in 2025 compared to 82 in 2024.
The use of force by Kingston Police Service in apprehending suspects appears to be down compared the year before.
A report to the police services board last week suggests that there were 66 reports of use of force by officers in 63 incidents in 2025. In 2024, there were 82 such reports in 73 incidents.
In the report, 50 reports were filed as a result of officers drawing or pointing firearms. In those cases, the suspects were either extremely violent and/or known or suspected to be armed with firearms or other weapons.
The report also says there was a total of one firearm discharged by police and that was related to dispatches of an injured animal.
There were 10 incidents where a conductive energy weapon was displayed in 2025 compared to 17 in 2024. However, the number of times it was deployed in 2025 (9) was more than in 2025 (7).
A use of force report must be filed by officers in the event a weapon is drawn in the presence of the public, a firearm is pointed at someone, a firearm is discharged, or a weapon or physical force causes injury.
