Police are actively monitoring school zones and bus routes to enforce safety and protect young passengers.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in the region are warning drivers about the dangers and legal consequences of failing to stop for school buses.
Officers have received multiple reports of drivers ignoring flashing red lights and extended stop signs, with one bus driver noting several violations in a single day.
Failing to stop for a school bus is illegal and carries serious penalties. A first offense can result in a fine of up to $2,000 and six demerit points. Repeat offenders face higher fines and could be jailed for up to six months.
Beyond legal consequences, disobeying school bus signals puts children’s lives at risk.
Drivers are reminded to stay focused on the road, avoid distractions, and be prepared to stop for buses from either direction.
