C John Bermingham helped start CKLC and CFLY radio stations in the 1950s.

One of the founders of two of Kingston's earliest radio stations has died.

C. John Bermingham passed away last Monday at the age of 95, approximately two months after his wife of 73 years, Nonie, died.

Bermingham was one of several people that started up CKLC (now New Country 98.9) and CFLY-FM (now 98.3 FLY FM) in 1954.

He attended Trinity College School and Queen's University, where he was awarded the Lorne Greene Scholarship in Broadcasting Arts, and Boston University. Upon graduating, Bermingham worked in Toronto producing national radio and television programs before joining St. Lawrence Broadcasting Corporation in 1953 as a co-owner, vice-president, and general manager.

Bermingham sold his shares in the ownership in the 1970s and started up a successful advertising business.

He was not only successful in the broadcasting and business world, he also dedicated himself in helping the community. Some of his achievements include: President of the Kingston & District United Way, Chairman of the Grand Theatre Board, and Governor and member of the Board of Management of Kingston General Hospital.

There is a joint celebration of John's and Nonie's lives this Wednesday inside the Great Hall at Fort Henry from 11:00 am to 1 pm.

People are encouraged to donate to the Kingston Humane Society or a charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.
