KHSC surpasses first-year PET-CT scan target, improving care close to home.
Kingston Health Sciences Centre has completed its 1,000th PET-CT scan more than a month ahead of schedule, marking a major milestone for the region’s only program of its kind.
The PET-CT program, launched in March 2025, combines metabolic and anatomical imaging to help doctors detect disease earlier, plan treatments and monitor patients more precisely.
Before the program began, about 1,000 patients each year travelled to Ottawa or Toronto for scans. KHSC aimed to match that number in its first year but reached the goal in just 11 months.
Dr. Omar Islam, head of radiology at KHSC and Queen’s University, says the milestone reflects teamwork and a commitment to patient care.
The program is already reducing travel, wait times and stress for patients and families across southeastern Ontario.
Funded through government support and donations via the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation, the $10-million project expands access to advanced imaging closer to home.
