Kingston Police arrested a 19-year-old after reports of gunshots near William Hackett Park on Saturday afternoon.
Officers responded around 1:45 p.m. to the area near Portsmouth Avenue and John Counter Boulevard. Witnesses reported seeing someone emerge from a wooded area and leave in a pickup truck.
Police quickly stopped the vehicle and found a .22-caliber rifle, spent casings, ammunition, and two deceased Canada Geese. The driver admitted to firing the weapon.
The Kingston resident was charged with careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace, and reckless discharge of a firearm.
A search of the suspect’s home led to the seizure of multiple firearms, including shotguns, rifles, pellet guns, and ammunition.
Police are reminding the public about firearm safety and hunting regulations. Anyone with information is asked to contact Kingston Police or Crime Stoppers.
