Water safety warning extended as rain raises local rivers

More rain is forecast through April 16, raising concerns about increased runoff and higher water levels.

Cataraqui Conservation has extended a water safety statement for inland lakes and streams across the region as rising water levels continue.

Recent weather has brought between 15 and 40 millimetres of rain over the Easter weekend, followed by snowfall on April 7. More rain is forecast through April 16, raising concerns about increased runoff and higher water levels.

Officials say streamflows are already above normal in some areas, including the Gananoque River system. Saturated ground conditions mean additional rainfall will quickly flow into waterways, increasing risks.

Water managers are adjusting dam operations to manage levels, but say this cannot prevent flooding entirely.

The main concern remains public safety near fast-moving water. Residents are urged to stay away from dams, hydroelectric stations and slippery shorelines, and to obey all warning signs and barriers.

Widespread flooding is not expected, but some low-lying areas could see localized water buildup.

The statement remains in effect until April 16, with conditions continuing to be monitored.
