SIU clears Kingston Police officers after man was injured during arrest

A man accused of taking a family vehicle without permission was diagnosed with a brain bleed in hospital.

3 Kingston Police officers have been cleared of any wrongdoing.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit were looking into the circumstances surrounding injuries suffered by a man during an arrest.

Officers went to a home near Bayridge Drive and Henderson Boulevard back on Feb.17.

A dispute began when a woman told investigators that a family member took her vehicle without her permission.

A 36-year-old man was arrested and charged with theft but not before he had a confrontation with the officers.

SIU investigators say the man was flailing his arms and feet, struck at the officers, and attempted to disarm them of their weapons.

They say officers proceeded to punch the man and used their conductive energy weapons in an effort to place him under arrest.

The man was diagnosed with a brain bleed in hospital.

The SIU concluded the officers' use of force was not excessive and proportionate to the nature and extent of the man’s resistance.
